Is Your Milk Safe?

Just got a letter in the mail stating that my infant formula could be contaminated. It may have beetles or beetle larva in it and it could possiblly cause my infant to get sick. If I possess any of the powdered formula with a particular lot # and other correlating info, I need to contact the infant formula manufacturer's hot line. Oh and probably have my child seen by his or her physician.

That's it in a nutshell, put into my own words as regards the letter that I received today.

My peace of mind quickly followed:

1. My babies are 6, 4, and 2
2. My milk is probably powder now being that my last child quit nursing at 15 months of age, should I worry.........?
3. NO!! Becasue breast milk rocks! Even if I was still nursing it would be safe and I definitely would not have to worry about any beetles or their babies, (larva), in my milk :)

If you have not received your letter or have not heard of the recall, check out this link to the Manufacturer's website:

If you don't have a little one on formula, pass this important information on to the next momma!

Is It Ok To Crave Ice?

Question from Client: I crave ice all the time, I actually find it refreshing. I heard that craving ice all the time is not good, and that something could be wrong with me? What do you think?

ST: PICA is the craving for non-food items, (dirt, ice, chemicals, plastics, laundry detergents, etc.), that have no nutritional value and have the potential to harm mother or baby during pregnancy.
*If you are experiencing cravings with any of the above items or the like, Seek A Professionals Help Immediately*

It is said, (Journal of American Dietetic Association), that if you are experiencing Pica, it could be a sign of iron deficiency, (anemia). These cravings can vary from person to person. The harm in such non-food items is the ingesting of chemicals/toxins, oral breakdown of the mouth and teeth, and digestive complications.

Pica cravings that some of my clients and friends have had: dirt, toilet tissue, starch, cotton balls, and paper towel.

Do not freak out if this sounds like you! Do not panic! Simply inform your health care provider so that you can be treated if there is a serious problem. Do not feel embarrassed! Your physician will know best how to help you. He or She can take note and reflect on your prenatal history and will probably request that your iron levels be checked as well as other labs to help pin-point any possible deficiencies.

If ice is just the craving, you may still consider mentioning this to your physician. Ice in comparison to the other 'non-food' items listed above is easily consumed and naturally excreted. However, you never want ice to replace the other vital nutrients in what should be a well-balanced diet.

Heartbeat= Sex of the Baby

Question From Friend:

The heartbeat was in the high 140's to low 150's, what do you think that means; boy or girl?

ST: I can't really think of it off the top of my head, the saying or idea behind how fast a heartbeat is identifies the sex of the baby. Personal experience, (having had 2 boys and 1 girl), my boys heartbeats were fast, always in the 160-170 range. My daughter's was around 150/154 to be exact pretty much every check up, as I grew in pregnancy.

I decided to do some very minute research, (I could have done more before posting, however,I think along the very same lines as the article, but do remain open-minded to tried and true trials):http://pregnancy.about.com/od/genderpredictions1/ss/genderfht_2.htm

I really like the thought that it shares. I haven't found any of the studies spoken of in particular, (will post later when/if I do).

Not only were my boys heart rates faster, but they were so much more active in utero than my daugheter, and even at present, (ages: 6, 4, and baby girl 2)!

People use the term 'myth' or 'old wives tales', well I don't doubt that some of them seem very true at times.

However, I'm going to hand this one over to Robin Weiss :)

You can take it or leave it, whichever is fine :) Ask me what you want, or even dare to enlighten the audience on your own opinion/advice.
